From Latin vetare, meaning “to forbid”.
The power to block any substantive resolution, including those related to:
• Ceasefires
• Peacekeeping missions
• Sanctions
• Condemnations of war crimes or occupations
Five times. Used for what? To “BLOCK” a “Ceasefire”!
That’s how many times a single country, the United States, stood in the way of a United Nations resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza since October 2023.
Five vetoes against stopping the bombs. Five vetoed against stopping starvation. Five vetoes against stopping the killing of civilians.
In a chamber meant to uphold international law and protect the vulnerable, a single raised hand has the power to block the will of nations. To delay justice. To deny life.
They call it the Security Council. But whose security is being protected?
The veto, designed in the ashes of World War II, was meant to prevent global catastrophe. Instead, it has become a tool to sustain it, when used to shield allies from accountability, or to stall ceasefires that could save thousands.
And in the silence that follows each veto, children die. Homes are erased. Futures are burned. Nations are cleansed.
Complicity wrapped in procedure.
If a system can’t stop a genocide in real time, then it’s time to ask: what is the UN securing? And for whom?
Don’t you think it’s about time to reform the United Nations? Let the Global South and Indigenous Nations lead. Just for once! let those who’ve suffered most shape the peace?!
Just for a change 🤷🏻♀️
